Though it was unrelated storywise to its predecessor, it featured many of the same gameplay mechanics, as well as graphics and quality-of-life elements like the Yakuza games of its time. Set in the 1800s instead of the 1600s, this has historical samurai Sakamoto Ryoma attempting to discover who killed his mentor amid growing societal disruption in Japan. The basic gameplay was very much the same as the two games that had come before, but with the addition of swordplay to the fighting system. The plot had the retired Musashi (taking the identity of an ancestral version of the franchise protagonist Kiryu) being hired by a young girl in order to take down an imposter. The game was both a retelling of the life of historical samurai Miyamoto Mushashi and a retelling of the first Yakuza game's storyline. This PlayStation 3 game, unlike the modern main series, was a jidaigeki story, taking place during the Japanese Edo period. This subseries of spinoffs began with 2008's Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan!, which translates into Like a Dragon Arrives! (as Like a Dragon is the franchise's title in Japan).
